The Resume
(May 6, 1982- )
Born in Moers, Germany
Drafted 106th overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft
Defenseman for the San Jose Sharks (2003-09), Vancouver Canucks (2009-11), Buffalo Sabres (2011-14), Pittsburgh Penguins (2014-15), Los Angeles Kings (2015-16) and the Chicago Blackhawks (2016)
Why he might be annoying
He spent the majority of his rookie season with the Sharks as a healthy scratch.
He overvalued himself into negotiating a long-term frontloaded contract with the Sabres.
He wound up underachieving to the point that Sabres owner Terry Pegula ordered the front office to use the team's second compliance buyout to terminate his contract after three years.
His offensive prowess he showed as a member of the Sharks and Canucks evaporated completely following his buyout from the Sabres.
He spent his final NHL season as a bottom two defenseman on Los Angeles, before being assigned to their farm team, then became a depth defenseman, who played sparingly in Chicago at the end of the year (2015-16).
Why he might not be annoying
He commuted to Krefeld as a child to participate in hockey, as his hometown of Moers didn't have a youth hockey program.
He initially planned to play major junior hockey in North America, before rescinding after his father was diagnosed with lymphoma.
He played in the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals with an injured shoulder.
He tied Uwe Krupp's record for most points scored by a German born defenseman in the NHL.
