Hockey Player

The Resume

Why he might be annoying:

He was over-hyped as a junior prospect.
His agent tried to convince the NHL to alter the league's draft elgibility to allow him to be drafted as a 17 year old.
He shares his name with his uncle, who is considered a National Lacrosse League legend.
For four seasons, hockey pundits referred to the 2009 NHL Entry Draft as 'The John Tavares sweepstakes.'
He opted to wear #91 with the Islanders, a number which is viewed as being sacred among Islanders fans as the jersey number is associated with Butch Goring.
As a child, his over competitiveness led him to often be ejected from games.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served as a ball boy for the NLL's Buffalo Bandits as a child.
During his formative years, he performed well enough to be moved up an age class.
He broke the Ontario Hockey League's all-time rookie goal scoring record, which was previously held by Wayne Gretzky.
In addition to breaking Gretzky's OHL record, he broke the league's all-time career goal scoring record, which was held by Peter Lee.
When the Islanders drafted him first overall, it brought renewed fan interest in the team.
He scored the series-winning goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning that sent the Maple Leafs to their first appearance in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs since 2004 (April 29, 2023).
