Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France
Best-known for the eight-volume novel ‘Les Thibault’ (1922-40)
Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature (1937)

Why he might be annoying:

He failed the entrance exam for the Sorbonne.
He was such a perfectionist that he destroyed several of his completed manuscripts.
He refused an invitation to join the French Academy.
He gave only one speech in public during his life, when he accepted the Nobel Prize.
In his will, he ordered that his private papers remain sealed until 25 years after his death.

Why he might not be annoying:

During World War I, he served on the front in a motor transport unit.
He and his wife were injured in an auto accident (1931).
He was influenced by Tolstoy’s ‘War and Peace’: ‘I like an author to exhaust his subject in the manner of the great Russian novelists.’
A friend described him as ‘warm and friendly and very approachable, known for his welcoming smile and total lack of hauteur.’
