Why he might be annoying:

    Esperanto is an official language nowhere.
    He supported Zionism for a while then rejected it.
    His future father-in-law funded his Esperanto research.
    He was deified by followers of Oomoto (a Japanese religion).
    He was criticized for basing Esperanto on European languages only.

Why he might not be annoying:

    Esperanto is by far the most widely spoken invented language. (Users include Quakers and the US Army.)
    He thought ethnic conflicts would end if everyone spoke one international language.
    He composed the Yiddish language’s first grammar guide.
    His three children all died in the Holocaust.
    Esperanto translates as ‘hope.’
