Why he might be annoying:

He admitted that his Mr. Peppermint outfit was ripped off from 'The Music Man.'
His viewers were known as 'Little Gumdrops.'
He described himself as 'Muffin's straight man.' (Muffin the Bear was one of the show's puppets.)
His pick for the most embarrassing moment of the show: 'A group of monkeys cartwheeling in circles around me and a pretty movie starlet, and one of the monkeys develops an acute case of diarrhea. Live!'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a block away during the John F. Kennedy assassination and became the first TV reporter to cover the story. (Fortunately, not in character as Mr. Peppermint.)
He subbed for Dick Clark on American Bandstand.
He entertained Texas kids for three and a half decades.
The TV special in which he retired as Mr. Peppermint featured a tribute from then-governor George W. Bush saying, 'One of my family's favorite places to travel has been Peppermint Place.'
Gibby's comment on dad's reaction to the Butthole Surfers' music: 'He's a really cool guy. He doesn't like it, but he says he does.'
