Cultist

The Resume

    (June 4, 1918-November 18, 1978)
    Born in Brownsville, Texas
Member of the Peoples Temple, founded by Jim Jones in 1955
Tried to dissuade Jones from carrying out the mass suicide of his congregation in Jonestown, Guyana
Commited suicide by drinking a cyanide laced fruit drink (along with 908 others) at age 60

Why she might be annoying:

Unlike many other People's Temple followers, she worked hard and was well off financially, but still fell prey to Jim Jones' snake oil rhetoric.
She would regularly remind other members what she gave up to join the cult.
Though others had to give up material possessions, Jones allowed her to keep and wear her jewelry.
Her alternative plan to 'revolutionary suicide' (as Jones called it) was to relocate the congregation to Russia.
In the end she was shouted down by fellow members and fell in line with Jones' ultimate plan, committing suicide in a steamy jungle far away from her humble beginnings.

Why she might not be annoying:

Her mother died when she was a youngster and made ends meet by working in cotton fields.
She rose out of poverty to become a self-reliant woman.
She met Jones in Los Angeles where she lived, liked his idea of a 'rainbow family,' and moved with him to San Francisco and ultimately Guyana.
She and 1105>Jones had a love-hate relationship; he admired her for speaking out on issues concerning her, but was sometimes angered by her independent spirit.
When Jones pointed a gun at her head and said he could make her disappear in the jungle, she looked him in the eye and stated, 'You can shoot me, but you are going to have to respect me first.' (Jones backed down.)
On what the F.B.I. calls the 'death tape' (44 minute tape of Jones' last sermon prior to the mass suicide), she is prominently heard saying, 'I don't see it like that. I mean, I feel like as long as there's life, there's hope. That's my faith.'
With armed guards throughout the settlement, she may have felt there was no way out and reluctantly did herself in.
