The Resume

    (September 14, 1867-December 23, 1944)
    Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts
    Illustrator and graphic artist
Drew for 'Harper's Weekly,' 'Colliers,' 'Scribners' and 'Life'
Editor and owner of 'Life' (1918-32)
Best known for creating the 'Gibson girl'
    Brother-in-law of Nancy Astor

Why he might be annoying:

He spent a year apprenticed to Augustus Saint-Gaudens before concluding he was not cut out to be a sculptor.
He also created a less remembered 'Gibson man.'
He kept talking about giving up pen and ink drawings to take up painting, but did not get around to it until after he retired from 'Life' at 65.

Why he might not be annoying:

He signed a record-setting deal with Collier's to create a two-page illustration each week for $50,000 a year -- and he was allowed to continue working for 'Life' at the same time.
He was the namesake for the Gibson cocktail (a martini with a pearl onion in place of the olive).
After he suffered a heart attack on an island off the coast of Maine, Franklin D. Roosevelt dispatched a Navy seaplane to transport him to New York City for hospitalization.
He said, 'There isn’t any ‘Gibson Girl,’ but there are many thousands of American girls, and for that let us all thank God.'
