Why they might be annoying:

They have gone by both .38 Special (with) and 38 Special (without the period).
Barnes quit the band in 1987, only to return in 1991.
Though touted as a Southern rock band, there biggest hit was 'Second Chance' in 1989 and was labeled the dreaded 'adult contemporary-oriented ballad.'
Though they still tour and released a new album in 2004, their act is part of the 'oldies circuit' and mainly limited to fairs, fests and casinos.

Why they might not be annoying:

Lead singer Donnie Van Zant is the younger brother of Ronnie Van Zant, the late lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd, and his replacement, brother Johnny.
They wrote and recorded the title track for the Nick Nolte, JoBeth Williams movie 'Teachers' (1984).
Once Brookins left in 1987 they never felt the need (rightfully so) to have two drummers in their line-up again.
To their credit, they have multi-platinum records, a string of top 40 hits and over 15 million records sold.
