Why he might be annoying:

He liked to brag about his success and make public predictions.
After fracturing his toe in the All Star Game (1937), he came back too soon, changed his pitching motion to favor his sore toe, and was never a dominant pitcher again.
He was brought in to pitch one game for the St. Louis Browns as a publicity stunt (September 28, 1947).
As a sportscaster, he constantly butchered the English language.
He was named an unindicted co-conspirator in a federal investigation of illegal gambling in Las Vegas (1970).

He backed up most of his boasts and noted, 'It ain't bragging if you can do it.'
He was named National League MVP after winning 30 regular season games and two World Series games (1934).
He was married to Patricia Nash for 43 years until his death.
After receiving a letter from a teacher complaining about his use of the word 'aint,' he replied, 'A lot of folks who ain't saying ain't, aint eating. So, Teach, you learn em English and I'll learn em baseball.'
