Why he might be annoying:

He wasn't initially interested in playing hockey in his formative years.
He admitted his interest in hockey began after watching the zamboni clean the ice.
He spurned playing in the Western Hockey League, electing to play professionally in Europe as an 18 year old instead.
His birth date made him ineligible for the 2015 NHL Draft by two days.
He was extremely hyped up in North American hockey circles for a couple seasons leading up to the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Why he might not be annoying:

He is the first American born player, trained exclusively in the Sun Belt to be drafted first overall.
He is the second player in Maple Leafs history, after Wendel Clark to be selected first overall.
He comes from a family of athletic lineage, as his father was a college baseball star and his great-uncle Wes Matthews played in the NFL during the 1960's.
He is of Mexican ancestry on his mother's side, which in turn makes him the highest drafted player of Hispanic descent in NHL history.
He played under Marc Crawford during his time in Zürich, which was an integral part of his development in the professional hockey ranks.
