Baseball Player
    (November 5, 1973- )
    Bats left, throws left
Member of the Kansas City Royals (1995-2000), Oakland Athletics (2001), Boston Red Sox (2002-2005), New York Yankees (2006-2009), Detroit Tigers (2010), Tampa Bay Rays (2011) and Cleveland Indians (2012)
    All Star (2002, 2005)
    World Series champ (2004, 2007)
    He did not attend college.
He clipped some hair after the Red Sox lost the first two games of the 2004 ALCS. He planned to donate that hair to charity, but that would have meant cutting more hair off then he wanted.
He said on the David Letterman Show, after winning the World Series, 'who knows it may be another 86 years before we win it again.'
His hairy look has been compared to Oscar the Grouch, Jesus Christ and a caveman.
Yankee broadcaster Michael Kay said his look is a 'lack of respect' to baseball.
He nicknamed his team idiots saying: 'We are not the cowboys anymore; we are just the idiots this year.'
He joked: 'But we don't think. If we use our brains, we're only hurting the team.'
He said: 'You know, the kids watching us out there, we've got the long hair, we've got the cornrows, we got just guys acting like idiots. And I think the fans out there like it.'
Because of him, many of his teammates allowed their hair and beards to grow long.
He is sponsored by Puma shoes.
He looks like a combination of Charlie Manson and Jim Morrison, when he got fat and hairy.
He has gone from being clean cut to long haired and bearded.
ESPN's Jon Miller joked that he just 'walked out of the forest' and back onto a baseball field in the spring of 2004.
When asked about his off-season training routines, he said: 'I live on a street where there's a 25 mph sign and the cops get you if you go anything over. I'd wait on the side of the street at night and when cars started coming, I'd race them to my house, so I know I can go at least 25 mph. I think I scared the cars and they'd speed up a little more because they'd see a caveman running after them.'
Gillette offered him a fee to shave his beard. He agreed and donated the entire sum to the Boston Public Library (May 21, 2004).
    He is left handed.
Because of his Jesus-like hair he told reporters 'Bless you. Bless you all' at 2004 Spring Training.
He was on the first Red Sox team to win a World Series in 86 years.
He inspired the 'W.W.J.D.D. What Would Johnny Damon Do?' t-shirt.
Bronson Arroyo said of him, 'What Curse? We have Jesus on our side.'
He said: 'After we were down, 3-0 (to the Yankees), we didn't panic. We were joking about packing up our things, kind of playing devil's advocate by thinking of the worst things possible and making sure good things happened.'
About his hair he said the 'Red Sox are letting us be men and letting us be our own individual people.'
Knowing George Steinbrenner decree that the Yankees be clean cut he said of the Red Sox long hair 'In no way was it ever to disrespect the Yankees.'
He does not consider his hair a superstition.
He suffered a concussion when he collided with teammate Damian Jackson in a playoff game against the Oakland A's (October 5, 2003).
In high school he suffered a concussion when he collide with future NFL star Warren Sapp.
    He was a military brat.
He was named to USA Today's High School All-American baseball team.
He is a fan favorite in Boston.
In 1998, he became the first (and only, so far) player in Major League history to reach double figures in home runs (18), stolen bases (26), triples (10) and doubles (30) in the same season.
He set an American League outfielders record for most consecutive defensive chances without committing an error with 593 (May 4, 2001-August 31, 2002).
He contributes time and money to various charitable organizations.
