Judge

The Resume

    (May 10, 1939- )
Born in Wyoming County, West Virginia
Artium Baccalaureus (Morris Harvey College, 1960, later the University of Charleston)
Juris Doctor (Wake Forest University, 1963)
West Virginia Senate representative (1972, elected 44th Senate President in third and final term, 1981)
Justice for the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia (1999–2004)
Defeated by Brent Benjamin in the 2004 West Virginia judicial election (prior to Caperton vs Massey Coal reaching the Justice for the Supreme Court of Appeals)

Why he might be annoying:

‘I was raised in a holler; I’ve never seen a sunrise or a sunset.’ (That’s a hollow, or small valley.)
The first time he met him, he didn’t think Jimmy Carter – who subsequently invited him to the White House twice – would become President.
In the wake of his loss to Benjamin, he filed suit over a campaign which had the ‘Scream at Racine.’ It was dismissed (2005).
Similar to him, his son’s middle name is Randolph.
Confusion abounds – even within its own website – as to whether he or his father is the namesake or founder of the Warren McGraw Law Firm (in 1963).
Hell, confusion even abounds as to whether he or his brother Darrell was named for their father.

Why he might not be annoying:

In his law school years, he planned to enter public service instead of the legal profession (‘when I was a youngster, a young student, (it) was deemed a high calling’).
One of his daughters became a judge on the Raleigh County Family Court.
Though the depicted case was not a coal contract but a chemical dump, he was a partial inspiration for the targeted appellate justice in John Grisham’s ‘The Appeal.’
Unlike the justice who defeated him in the election (an Ohio native), he was actually born in the state in which he served.
He ran for a circuit court judge post in 2008, which he would continue holding.
