    It was established as a replacement settlement for Aklavik, which was prone to flooding.
    It is the northernmost community in North America, which is possible to access by car.
    The intersection of Mackenzie Road and Veterans Way holds the unique distinction of being the northernmost intersection in North America that is controlled by a traffic signal.
    It is one of the few communities in Canada that has a predominantly Indigenous population.
    It hosts the Midnight Sun Fun Run on the weekend closest to the summer solstice, which draws runners worldwide to the community.
