Born in Augsburg, Germany
Works include the Weingartern Altar (1493), the St. Afra Altar (1495), the Altar of the Basilica of St. Mary (1499), the Altar of the Basilica of St. Paul (1503), the St. Catherine Altar (1512), the St. Sebastian Altar (1516) and ‘The Fountain of Life’ (1519)

Why he might be annoying:

Almost nothing is known about his early life.
He fled Augsburg after being declared in default on his tax payments (1516)
He was sued by his brother Sigismund over the unpaid debts he left behind in Augsburg.
He ended up taking refuge with a group of monks to avoid his creditors.
He was overshadowed by his son and namesake, Hans Holbein the Younger.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a pioneer in transforming German painting from the Gothic to the Renaissance style.
In addition to painting, he produced woodcuts, illustrated books, and designed stained glass windows.
His son got his start as his apprentice.
