Why he might be annoying:

He was descended from Italian nobility.
He joined his Dominican Order at the unusually (even for those times) early age of fourteen.
He never worked in a parish as a priest.
He expelled all Jews from the Papal States, except for some very wealthy and well-connected businessmen.
His excommunication of Elizabeth I of England backfired and led to the increased persecution of Catholics in Great Britain.
He fiercely fought against nepotism but made his own nephew a cardinal.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was flawlessly honest and fierce in rooting out corruption and heresy.
As a cardinal, he put eight of his own bishops on trial.
Remarkably humble, he actually begged with tears in his eyes not to be made pope.
As pope he continued to visit the poor and hospitals, even bathing patients, and among his first acts as pope was to give large amounts of money to the poor.
His continued wearing of the white robes of a Dominican priest as pope may be the reason popes wear all white robes.
He had major public works projects undertaken in Rome while he was pope.
He taught philosophy and theology for over fifteen years early in his priesthood.
In his defense, his nephew was eminently qualified to be a cardinal and his family most definitely did not profit from his papacy.
He forced bishops to live in their own dioceses and enforced the dictates of the Council of Trent.
His reform of the liturgy was unchanged until the 1960's.
