U.S. Congressman
    (June 24, 1925-March 2, 2019)
Born in New York City, New York
Birth name was Ogden Rogers Reid
Publisher and Editor of The New York Herald Tribune (1955-58)
    U.S. Ambassador to Israel (1959-61)
    Represented New York's 26th District (1963-73) and 24th District (1973-75)
    His nickname was 'Brownie.'
He abandoned his bid for Governor of New York after a poor showing in the primaries (1974).
He was unsuccessful as the Democratic nominee for Westchester County Executive (1983).
His time as head of the New York Herald marked the paper's financial decline, resulting in a Corporate buyout by a rival publisher in 1958.
He opted against running for reelection to retain his House seat after fending off a Primary challenger in 1974.
He served as an Army private during World War II (post-War he rose to the rank of Reserve Captain).
During his time as Ambassador to Israel he regularly corresponded with Prime Minister Golda Meir.
During his tenure in the House, he sponsored 85 pieces of legislation (and co-sponsored close to 100).
After he traveled to Selma, Alabama to show his support for the Civil Rights movement, he received a letter from Martin Luther King reading: 'Your very presence ... had an electric effect upon the voteless and beleaguered Negro citizens of this city, county, state and nation.'
He publicly changed his registration from Republican to Democrat, stating that he could not support Richard Nixon for re-election and the Republican Party had 'moved to the right' and was 'not showing the compassion and sensitivity to meet the problems of the average American' (March 1972).
In his later years, he served as Environmental Conservation commissioner in the administration of New York governor Hugh Carey.
