The Resume
(September 13, 1987-January 15, 1988)
American TV series set in 1950's Los Angeles featuring an ex-cop turned private eye
Starred Michael Woods, Lisa Jane Persky and Josh Brolin
Why Private Eye might be annoying
It was not set in any particular year, just a generic early 1950's Los Angeles.
It was crushed in the ratings by Dynasty, lasting only seven episodes.
Almost every character on the show, regulars and guests, smoked.
The dialog just never came across as authentic fifties speech.
John Brolin's character, a private eye sidekick by day and rock musician by night, was very gimmicky.
Why Private Eye might not be annoying
The producers made a great effort to get the details of the time -- vintage clothes, cars, etc. -- correct.
Despite the setting, the show avoided becoming a TV version of film noir.
It had an excellent cast and some very good guest stars.
It didn't overdo the violence.
It portrayed subjects such as prostitution and homosexuality in an uncompromising fashion.
It didn't concentrate on just one area of Los Angeles, such as Hollywood, but set episodes in Hispanic East LA and Chinatown as well.
