    He was fired by the Lions after a year and a half on the job.
    He was nicknamed 'Crusty Cal' by journalists.
    His second tenure with the Bombers ended after a 68-7 playoff loss to the Argonauts, led by Doug Flutie (1996).
    His CFL coaching career came to an end after one season with the Roughriders when the team finished dead last in the league (1999).

    He was part of the coaching staff at the University of Hawaii during the school's dominant run during the late 1960's.
    He apprenticed in the CFL under the likes of both Eagle Keys and Hugh Campbell.

    He guided the Blue Bombers to their first Grey Cup title in 22 years (1984).
    He had a life-saving bypass surgery and heart transplant (1992).
    He had a statue erected posthumously outside the Bombers new stadium to honor his contributions to the City of Winnipeg (2017).
