    He’s a hard-line Islamic leader who was a leading figure in imposing Sharia law in northern Sudan.
    Despite his claims of supporting human rights, the regime he set up after 1989 was associated with massive human rights violations.
    His full name, al-Dakīwar Ḥassan 'Abd Allah at-Turābī, is so long and hard to pronounce.
    He invited radical Islamic terrorists to Sudan, most notably Osama Bin Laden, who subsequently turned the country into an Al-Qaeda base (1990-1996).
    He supported an assassination attempt on Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
    He was Ayman Al-Zawahiri’s mentor.
    He was wounded in an attack by a Sudanese-Canadian at Ottawa International Airport (May 1992).
    His ex-pal Omar Al-Bashir imprisoned him in Kobar prison (March 2004-June 28, 2005).
    He went on a hunger strike while in prison.
    He told Al-Bashir to hand himself to the International Criminal Court for causing the genocide in Darfur.
    He wants Sudan to be a federal country where Muslims and Christians share equal power.
    He supported the overthrow of President Gaafar Nimeiry, who was notorious for imposing a harsh version of Sharia law in Sudan.
    His arrests by the Sudanese government were condemned by human rights groups, who condemned them as arbitrary.
    He’s fluent in both English and French.
