Why they might be annoying:

They were known as the Stiff Kittens and Warsaw before changing their name to Joy Division.
They got the phrase 'joy division' from a WW II-based novel where it was used as slang for 'concentration camp units wherein inmates were forced to prostitute themselves for the enjoyment of Nazi soldiers.'
They scrapped their debut album after a studio engineer added synthesizers to many of the songs, prompting them to feel that the album wasn't 'punk enough.'
Ian Curtis' lyrics were described as being 'pointlessly depressing.'
Many of their concerts were plagued by Ian's health.
They continued to reissue albums and produce Joy Division compilations even after Ian Curtis' death in 1980.

Why they might not be annoying:

They formed a few months after the Sex Pistols' first performance in Manchester.
They morphed from a punk band to what some consider one of the first Goth bands ever.
They were signed to their own record label, Enigma.
They would release their original debut album in 1982 as a bootleg and in 1992 as a wide release.
Ian's health was so bad that he would have seizures while on stage.
Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and Bernard Albrecht formed the band New Order after Ian's death (1981).
