Despite his credentials at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he was passed over in the NHL Draft.

He was discovered in the Finnish Elite League by Devils GM Lou Lamoriello, who encouraged him to sign with the team as a free agent.

After being passed over in the NHL Draft, he opted to hone his skills in the European Leagues.
He earned the Pekka Rautakallio trophy as the Finnish Elite League's top defenseman on two occasions.
He was a starting defenseman for the Eastern Conference at the 2004 NHL All-Star Game.
