The Resume

    (September 12, 1940- )
    Born in Portland, Oregon
Pitcher for the Detroit Tigers (1963-75), New York Mets (1976), and San Diego Padres (1978-79)
    217 wins, 191 losses
    3.44 career ERA
    2,832 strikeouts
    Three-time All-Star (1969, 1971-72)
    World Series MVP (1968)

Why he might be annoying:

He showed up late for his first spring training with the Tigers, explaining that he had stayed in Portland in order to take an exam to be a postal carrier during the offseason.
He developed a noticeable gut during his years in Detroit. ('When I'm doing good, nobody says anything about it. If I lose a few games, they start saying I'm out of shape.')
He sat out the 1977 season and ran a donut shop in suburban Detroit instead.

Why he might not be annoying:

Although born right-handed, he developed a left-handed pitch as a result of exercises to strengthen his arm after he broke his left collarbone in a childhood accident.
After he was called to active duty with the Michigan National Guard during race riots in Detroit (July, 1967), he received death threats from the Black Panthers. In response, the FBI posted sharpshooters on the roof of Tiger Stadium for his next two starts.
He won Games Two, Five, and Seven of the 1968 World Series, becoming the last pitcher to throw three complete games in a Series.
When he retired, he held the record for most strikeouts by a left-handed pitcher. (The record was broken two years later by Steve Carlton.)
