    His tenure as the mayor of Montreal was plagued with various controversies.
    He allowed the city's boroughs to have more power than the downtown, which drew the ire of many of the city's residents.
    He initially proposed to rename Avenue de Park to Avenue Robert Bourassa without public consultation, before losing the support of the Bourassa family., which forced him to abandon the idea altogether.
    He was under investigation after it was revealed he made business deals with the city's mafia cartels.
    He was forced to step down after the allegations of ties to the mafia proved to be true.
    He served as the president of the Montreal Metropolitan Community, prior to his election as mayor.
    He worked in various jobs in the business and retail sectors, prior to entering politics.
    He served as a cabinet minister in both the governments of Robert Bourassa and Daniel Johnson, during his tenure as a member of the Quebec National Assembly.
    He was elected for three terms as Montreal's mayor, prior to resigning.
    Unlike Toronto mayor Rob Ford, he wisely resigned when the scandals starting garnering media attention and retreated to private life.
