Discovered Hudson’s Bay, most of the northeastern islands of Canada, the Hudson Valley and Manhattan

Why he might be annoying:

Very little is known about his life prior to his voyages.
He left his wife and children for long stretches while he went exploring.
He took one son with him on at least 3 of his voyages as ship’s boy, including the last voyage where they never returned.
He believed that the sun shone so brightly at the North Pole that the ice melted, and that he could sail across the North Pole to the Orient.
He claimed to have sighted mermaids on his voyages.
One of the most polluted rivers in North America is named after him.
His ships logs show fighting, killing and raping the Native Americans he encountered.
It is believed he accepted a contract with the Dutch to get their maps of the New World and turn them over to England.
He was superstitious.
He attempted to sail west on the Hudson River, believing it would lead to the Pacific Ocean.

Why he might not be annoying:

He could read and write in a time when most people were illiterate.
He sailed further north than any explorer before him.
He was set adrift in Hudson’s Bay along with a few other crew members during a mutiny, they were never seen again.
