    Born in San Francisco, California
    Best known for the short story collection 'Slaves of New York' (1986)
    Also wrote the novels 'American Dad' (1981), 'A Cannibal in Manhattan' (1987), 'The Male Cross Dresser Support Group' (1991), 'By the Shores of Gitchee Gumee' (1996), 'A Certain Age' (1999) and 'Peyton Amberg' (2003)

Why she might be annoying:

    With Bret Easton Ellis and Jay McInnery, she was part of the mid-80s literary 'brat pack.'
    She had six different agents for her first six books.
    She had a cameo in the flop film version of 'Slaves of New York.'
    In the early 90s, she was rumored to be a transsexual who had been born Tom A. Janowitz.

Why she might not be annoying:

    Critics have compared her satires to Mark Twain and Kurt Vonnegut.
    She says that despite her reputation as an 80s party girl, she was always asleep by midnight.
    She said, 'As a writer, I don't think it's my responsibility to make a point. I just write and hope there's someone who'll like it.'
