Voice Actress

The Resume

    (September 13, 1908-January 4, 1998)
Born in The Bronx, New York
    Birth name was Mae Kwestel
Best known as providing the voices for Betty Boop and Olive Oyl
Also voiced Swee'pea, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Little Audrey and Winky-Dink
Appeared on-screen in 'Funny Girl,' 'New York Stories' and 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation'
Portrayed Aunt Bluebell in ads for Scott Towels

Why she might be annoying:

Her most famous voice roles didn't exactly advance the women's rights movement.
Betty Boop and Olive Oyl were originally voiced by other women.
She testified for the Fleischer Brothers when Helen Kane sued them for copying the Betty Boop character from Kane's persona.
She temporarily lost her Olive Oyl gig when she refused to move with the animation studio from New York to Miami.
She tried out for Olive Oyl for Hanna-Barbera's 'Popeye' TV series in the late 1970's, but lost out.
Her last screen role as the confused Aunt Bethany in 'Christmas Vacation' ironically foreshadowed her eventual diagnosis and death from Alzheimer's disease.

Why she might not be annoying:

She had a withered arm (one that was shorter than the other).
She stuck with the entertainment industry even though her strict Orthodox Jewish family discouraged her work.
She imitated many celebrities of her day such as Helen Kane, Maurice Chevalier and Mae West on the vaudeville circuit before going into voice acting.
She temporarily took over the role of Popeye when Jack Mercer went to serve in World War II.
When she approached 80, she reprised her Betty Boop role for 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?'
She memorably added patriotism to the holiday season with her renditions of 'Star-Spangled Banner' and 'Pledge of Allegiance' for the film 'Christmas Vacation.'
