Baseball Player

The Resume

    (October 25, 1924-March 25, 2021)
    Born in Seattle, Washington
Third baseman for the New York Yankees (1946-52,1954)
After his playing days, became a cardiologist
Interim President of the Texas Rangers (1974)
President of the American League (1984-94)

Why he might be annoying:

One of his nicknames was ‘the Blonde Phenom.’
He said about playing baseball while also attending med school, ‘the only regret I might have is that I didn’t play ball exclusively for two or three years. I’d like to know how well I could have done if I’d concentrated exclusively on baseball for several years.’
He was on the shortlist of candidates to replace Bowie Kuhn as Commissioner, but was passed over for Peter Uberroth.
His proposal as AL President to determine the extent of the drug problem in baseball by testing players randomly and anonymously was rejected by the players’ union.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was president of the student body at Galileo High School in San Francisco.
When he graduated high school, fifteen of the sixteen Major League teams expressed interest in signing him. (He did not sign with any at the time, as he instead went to college, followed by military service.)
While at Stanford, he and another student rescued a Coast Guardsman from the ocean after a plane crash (1943).
In four World Series, his batting average was .439 (18 for 41), a record at the time for players with at least 20 at-bats. (When he died, it was still the sixth best batting average.)
He missed the 1953 season after being sent to serve in a battalion aid station in Korea.
While dating his future wife Sara French, he told her how to describe him to her parents: ‘Tell your mother that I’m in medical school, studying to be a cardiologist. Tell your dad that I play third base for the Yankees.’
