Why he might be annoying:

He was selfish, pessimistic, and loathed humanity.
He was addicted to pornography.
He was a racist.
He hated children.
He never married, but had long-term affairs with three women simultaneously.
Queen Elizabeth offered him the title of Poet Laureate, but he refused it.
He described people who checked out books at his library as 'morons.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was unpretentious.
He continued to work as a librarian even after becoming famous.
He loved jazz.
He had a wicked sense of humor.
He wasn't afraid to use slang and even profanity in his poems.
One poem contains the lines: 'They fuck you up, your mum and dad/They do not mean to, but they do/They fill you with the faults they had/And add some extra, just for you.'
