    Delegate to the Constitutional Convention
    Governor of South Carolina (1776-1778, 1779-1782)
    2nd Chief Justice of the United States (August 12, 1795-December 15, 1795)

Why he might be annoying:

    He owned slaves.
    He suffered from mental illness.
    He initially served as an Associate Justice but then stepped down to serve the South Carolina Supreme Court.
    His appointment to the Chief Justice position was rejected by the Senate.
    He was very much against Jay's Treaty which made peace with Great Britain.
    He only served as an interim Chief Justice after John Jay stepped down.
    His total term as Chief Justice was one month and three days.
    He ran for president against George Washington and lost overwhelmingly (1789).

Why he might not be annoying:

    His brother Edward Rutledge signed the Declaration of Independence.
    He received dictatorial powers over South Carolina during the Revolution but did not abuse them.
    He served in the Revolutionary War.
    He lost most of his property in South Carolina as a result.
    He never regained the financial standing he had before the war.
    He loved his wife and never recovered when she died (1792).
    He was rejected by the Senate because he opposed the Federalist Party.
