Co-discovered with Thomas Bopp Comet Hale-Bopp (July 23, 1995)
Earned Bachelor's Degree in Physics (1980) from the U.S. Naval Academy
Earned Master's Degree (1989) and Ph.D. (1992) from New Mexico State University

Why he might be annoying:

He has the same name as the actor who portrayed the Skipper on 'Gilligan's Island.'
When he couldn't land a job as an astronomer, he founded the Southwest Institute for Space Research and made himself its director.
He strongly encourages monetary donations on his website (in short - he begs for money).
Though he has observed more than 200 comets, he stumbled upon Hale-Bopp accidentally.

Why he might not be annoying:

He is an expert in his field, has worked for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Deep Space Network and was involved in NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft program.
He advocates improvement of scientific knowledge and literacy in today's society.
He had led American scientists, teachers and students in delegations to promote cooperative scientific achievement with people of similar background in Iran.
He was given top billing when C/1995 O1 was formally designated Comet Hale-Bopp.
