Loosely based on the book by Pierre Boulle and the series of movies

It got stomped in the ratings by 'Chico and the Man,' of all things.
It didn't have a finale.
Several TV movies were made by combining some of its episodes and presenting them as new made for TV movies.
One rather uncomfortable episode had a blind female chimpanzee falling in love with a human not realizing what he was.
It didn't have the sense of humor found in the original movie.

It had an excellent cast and generally good writing.
It wasn't preachy.
The SFX was kept to a minimum.
It had some pretty good action scenes in it.
It has done quite well on DVD and in reruns.
