Magician

The Resume

    (October 8, 1935-April 8, 2013)
    Born in Adelaide, Australia
Magician and hypnotist, aka ‘The Impossibilist’ and ‘The Man They Call Reveen’
Royal Academy of the Arts in England alumnus
Co-founder of the Magic Castle (Los Angeles)
Author of ‘The Superconscious World (1987)’
International Brotherhood of Magicians honoree (2009)
    Manager of Lance Burton

Why he might be annoying:

At first he called his county fair show ‘Reveen: the Star of Magic.’ That changed when he was told, ‘Star is rats spelled backwards.’
He did not come to North America until 1961, via Hawaii (the promoter grabbed all his loot).
His parents originally wanted him to become a doctor.
The Trailer Park Boys character Ricky was nicknamed Reveen for his loose physical resemblance.
He was the subject of a 1960s comic book storyline where his goateed ‘kids’ desperately wanted to get into the act, got shot down, and upstaged him by forming their own Beatles-type band.
He went missing for a brief time in Vegas (2010).

Why he might not be annoying:

He loosely resembles a cross between – but doesn’t really sound like – Harry Blackstone Jr. and Wolfman Jack.
At age six, he watched a female magician pull a rabbit from a flaming dish and pull a guinea pig out of a broken bottle — and the die was cast.
He offered free tickets to businesses who put up his show posters and percentages of ticket revenues to radio stations for his advertisements.
To assist him in giving successful shows in eastern and atlantic Canada, he became fluent in French.
He is careful about moral religious beliefs (‘keep the show clean; you won’t have people coming back if you keep throwing filth at them’).
His wife and four sons are the key figures in his stage act (sometimes pointing out the druggies in the audience).
Having set up a private medical practice in Salt Lake City, he was approached by doctors who saw hypnosis as a possible medical treatment (and later lobbied their governments to give him citizenship).
In an age where Facebook is a major advertising method – which he himself used – his shows get their audiences mainly through word of mouth.
