Why he might be annoying:

He and Carol were already married to other people when they began their affair (he had eight kids with his first wife).
When they both divorced their spouses to be together, his family was devastated and sided with his first wife.
Carol would perpetually blame herself for their marriage ending after twenty years, but his being a chronic alcoholic probably didn't help the situation much.
They divorced at the start of Mama's Family's second season, resulting in the character of Eunice disappearing from show's plot entirely (she would only ever be mentioned in passing).
Vicki Lawrence ended up in the middle repeatedly, eventually resulting in Carol cutting her off after she opted to work with Joe when Mama's Family went into syndication.

Why he might not be annoying:

He won five Emmy Awards, the first for The Garry Moore Show.
He produced the majority of his wife's projects, including her 1962 Carnegie Hall concert and the 1964 televised adaptation of her Broadway hit 'Once Upon a Mattress.'
He wrote The Carol Burnett Show's famous theme song, 'I'm So Glad We Had This Time Together,' which Carol sang at the conclusion of every episode.
Carol Burnett's grandmother - who raised her - directed her last words to him ('Joe, you see that spider up there? 'Every few minutes a big spider jumps on that little spider and they go at it like rabbits!')
His and Carol's daughter Carrie struggled with drug addiction, putting a strain on their marriage.
The couple worked to help Carrie get treatment and even raised money for the clinic where she was treated.
He and Carol reconciled after their divorce when it was revealed he had been diagnosed with cancer.
