    Born in New Canaan, Connecticut
    Founder of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice (1873)
    Appointed special agent for the US Post Office to keep 'obscene, lewd or lascivious material' out of the mails (1873)

Why he might be annoying:

    His notion of what was lewd was so broad that some anatomy textbooks were banned.
    He boasted of hounding 15 people into committing suicide.
    He regularly resorted to fraud and entrapment in his anti-vice crusades.
    His motto was 'Morals, not art or literature.'
    He called George Bernard Shaw an 'Irish smut peddler.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He fought for the Union during the Civil War (1863-65).
    He helped shut down the corrupt Louisiana Lottery.
    He suffered a serious blow to the head from an anonymous assailant.
