Why he might be annoying:

He was a womanizer.
His detractors claim he drove both his wife, Sylvia Plath, and his married lover to commit suicide.
Many feminists and scholars accuse him of murdering Plath.
He destroyed Plath’s journals after her death, which didn’t help his case.
He has been called ‘the most despised poet on American college campuses.’
He was only chosen as Poet Laureate when Philip Larkin refused the title.

Why he might not be annoying:

There’s no evidence that he murdered Sylvia Plath.
After Plath died, he was harassed in public by her fans for the rest of his life.
When his married lover committed suicide, she also killed their four-year-old daughter.
He served in the Royal Air Force.
His children’s book ‘The Iron Man’ was made into a well-regarded film (‘The Iron Giant’).
‘The Guardian’ newspaper said he ‘changed the face of English literature.’
