Why he might be annoying:

In his autobiography, he described himself as a child as 'not very active,' 'hav[ing] no skill or agility,' and 'timid and ineffective,' and he claimed that he could not play the games that other boys could.
He was an idealist (believing that the external world is somehow an illusion).
G. F. W. Hegel was one of his biggest influences.
His work doesn't have a great influence now.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was first taught philosophy by his mother.
He grew up in the old West (how many philosophers came from that environment?!)
He graduated from the University of California.
He wrote a history of California.
He was a Christian who could honestly and critically examine his faith.
