It is a blatant copycat of Stranger Things/The Vampire Diaries/13 Reasons Why.
What's next? Little Orphan Annie and Daddy Warbucks reimagined as lovers? Charlie Brown and Snoopy ending up flophouse junkies?
Unless you were a diehard reader of the comics beforehand, over half the show's references will go over your head.
For example, in this version Archie and Miss Grundy enter a sexual relationship (only regular readers will realize how fucked up this is).
It has been accused of queerbaiting its characters (Cheryl the least sympathetic character is outed as a lesbian, Betty/Veronica are now bi-curious, and the only originally asexual character, Jughead is made into a hetero).
Within three seasons, Archie has A) become a mob enforcer B) ended up in juvie where he learns to fight and becomes an illegal boxer and C) donned a vigilante mask to protect street kids from criminals. And the comic strip still has him saying 'Hot Dog!'
It leans in heavily on the gratuitous Mr. Fanservice shirtless scenes (see: KJ Apa in almost every episode).
So, yeah, Season 3 spoiler: Cheryl's mom Penelope Blossom runs a fetish-fantasy dominatrix club.
A car accident involving Apa running into a tree driving home after a 14-hour work day filming drew accusations of overworking the young cast.
It has a huge following in Australia.
It is one of the most popular shows on Netflix.
It has sparked a revived interest in the Archie Comics franchise.
It has done some genuinely interesting things with the Riverdale residents.
Its whodunit-style first season was reminiscent of Twin Peaks.
It was originally conceived as a time-traveling teen comedy and spent years in development hell.
The cast album of the 'A Night to Remember' musical episode was not only a hit soundtrack but revived interest in 'Carrie: The Musical' (an infamous flop).
It pays homage to classic films (including 'Rebel Without a Cause' and 'American Graffiti').
It gave Cole the opportunity to break out of his twin brother's shadow.
'Chapter Forty-Nine: Fire Walk with Me' was dedicated to Luke Perry, who died from a stroke two days before the Season 3 episode aired.
