Stories about his interaction with fans have not always been pleasant.
Since he wore his team hat so much, it made him look like a different person when it was off.
In the 1980s, he was renown for finishing high on the money list without winning many tournaments.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was 3rd on the money list and 8th in the World Rankings at the time of his death.
He died in a plane crash.
He had a trademark outfit of knickers, a driving cap and argyle socks, which usually matched the colors of NFL football teams.
He has an award named in his honor for golfers that represent what he stood for.
He considers his victory at the lowly 1982 Quad Cities Open, his most cherished as it was the only one his father saw.
When he won a tournament in the 1980s, he donated his winner's check to a hospital in his father's memory.
He met his wife during a tournament.
His memorial was attended by 3,000.
He was a practical joker.
