Committed suicide by jumping off a steamship into the Gulf of Mexico

Why he might be annoying:

Much of his poetry is virtually incomprehensible.
He dropped out of high school.
He resented his wealthy father yet lived off him as an adult.
He had an affair with the wife of his best friend Malcolm Lowry.
He wasted a Guggenheim fellowship by binge drinking in Mexico.
The night before his suicide, he became so drunk and violent he had to be nailed into his cabin.

Why he might not be annoying:

His father, candy manufacturer Clarence Crane, created Life Savers.
He read voraciously and educated himself.
He described T.S. Eliot's pessimistic ‘The Waste Land' as ‘so damned dead.'
Homophobia contributed to his depression, alcoholism and suicide.
E.E. Cummings said (rather oddly), ‘Crane's brain was no bigger than a pin, but it didn't matter, he was a born poet.'
Gay studies revived interest in his work in the 1970's, and he is now considered a key modernist writer.
