He used to hang around a record store in Long Beach all the time with his group 213.
213 recorded their first demo in the back of that store.
It could be claimed nepotism is the reason for his success, as he is Dr Dre's half brother
He needed Dr. Dre to distribute his music.
His last 3 albums have received little media attention.

Why he might not be annoying:

Although Dr. Dre helped his mainstream career, his recordings were huge underground hits and he already had a large following.
He was one of the innovators of G Funk.
He appeared on and produced possibly two of the most influential rap albums of all time 'The Chronic' and 'Doggystyle.'
He is humble and constantly thanks all the people who have helped him out and does not hold a grudge against those who didn't (something rare in the music biz).
His voice is distinctive and has become a signature to his fame.
