Its Flight 800 exploded over the Atlantic Ocean, killing all passengers (July 17, 1996).
In June 1985, a flight was hijacked by Shiite Muslims demanding the release of Lebanese from Israeli jails.
Nelly once filed a complaint against them following run-ins with a flight attendant who refused to give him a pillow, and a pilot who threatened to have him arrested.
They declared bankruptcy three times.

They've been in service for over 75 years.
Howard Hughes once owned the airline (1939-61).
Billionaire Carl Icahn was a major figure at the airline in its final years.
They were the only airline (along with Pan Am) to serve Europe until the 1970's.
