Wrote 'Persian Letters (1721)' and 'The Spirit of the Laws (1748)'
Divided French society into three estates: the monarchy, the aristocracy, and the commons
Supported the theory of the separation of powers

Why he might be annoying:

He was an aristocrat born into privilege.
Not ironically, he thought that hereditary aristocracies were acceptable in society.
He believed women should never be the heads of families.
Despite his views on balanced state power, he still thought a monarchy was the best form of government.
He thought the British Constitution was more or less perfect.
He believed that the climate influenced people's natural temperament.
Thus, those living in the moderate temperatures of France were the 'best' people.
The Catholic Church banned his political writings.

Why he might not be annoying:

He spoke out against slavery.
His 'Persian Letters' poked fun at 18th century French society.
Though he didn't think women could handle families, he believed they were capable of being rulers.
He said: 'A government should be set up so that no man need be afraid of another.'
His separation of powers heavily influenced America's three governmental branches.
His ideas can be seen in most modern democratic constitutions.
He died completely blind.
