Why he might be annoying:

    Shortly after appealing to the international community for drought relief, he bought an expensive presidential jet and two helicopters (1992).
    He sent troops to support Laurent Kabila in the Second Congo War (1998), creating a major drain on the budget.
    He had the constitution amended so he could be elected to a third term (1999).
    He called homosexuality 'un-African and unnatural' and said about gays, 'Police are ordered to arrest you, and deport you, and imprison you too.' (2001)
    He praised Robert Mugabe and claimed Zimbabwe's problems are the result of interference by British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He spent three decades in exile.
    He is known as 'the founding father of Namibia.'
    His 'national reconciliation' policies maintained peace in a country with ten major ethnic groups.
    He generally followed pragmatic economic policies and downplayed ideology.
    He encouraged the advancement of women in a traditionally male-dominated society.
    After leaving office, he earned a masters degree in geology (2009).
