The Resume

    Born in Baltimore, Maryland
    White House correspondent, journalist
Washington D.C. bureau chief for American Urban Radio Networks
Attended Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland
Semi-regular contributor for Politico, CNN, Face the Nation, TV One, ABC's This Week, and The Huffington Post
Author of 'The Presidency in Black and White: My Up-Close View of Three Presidents and Race in America' (2015)
Came to national attention after a heated exchange with President Donald Trump, during a press conference, in which he suggested that she set up a meeting with the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), also asking if they were 'friends' of hers (Feb. 16, 2017)

Why she might be annoying:

Her name sounds like 'April Rain.'
She also shares a name with a popular character from the Adventure video game, 'The Longest Journey.'
Her strong suit is speaking on race-related issues, usually with a partisan tint (e.g. penning a 2015 article, 'Grading the President on Race').
Two days prior to the Trump incident, she had experienced a high-profile confrontation with Trump aide Omarosa Manigault who accused her of being a paid surrogate for the Clinton campaign, in 2016.
As Ryan told it, the argument stemmed from a series of accusatory emails Manigault had sent months prior. The interaction almost turned physical, to the point where Ryan told her that she 'had better back up.'
Manigault later commented: 'She came in with an attitude. For her to characterize me as the bully — I’m so glad we have this tape. . . because it’s ‘liar, liar, pants on fire' (Ryan protested that the taping was a 'Nixonian,' although the tape has yet to be played to determine who was in the right).
While she may not have been a paid spokesperson, she openly favored Clinton and was definitely very cozy with the campaign, as was revealed by WikiLeaks.
Leaked emails showed her repeatedly acting like a fan-girlish sycophant to Clinton's people, praising her SNL appearance with Kate McKinnon and advising her on issues pertaining to the black community (even offering to 'set up' a meeting with the CBC).

Why she might not be annoying:

She is a thirty-plus year WH correspondent, who has covered the administrations of four Presidents.
She was named one of the Outstanding Young Women in America by the National Press Club (1997).
She was honored as an American Swiss Foundation Young Leader (2004).
She was a finalist for the National Association of Black Journalists - Salute to Excellence Award for her Interview with Minister Louis Farrakhan.
She was a favorite correspondent of President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, and accompanied them on a trip to the Gulf Coast for the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
She was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work - Debut Author (2015).
She was actually good friends with Omarosa, and was even asked to be maid of honor at her wedding, but she declined (hint hint).
Her encounter with Manigault also led to the inadvertent admission on her part that the administration was compiling a 'dossier' on all journalists printing uncomplimentary things about the President.
She was sarcastically taunted by President Trump after she asked a straightforward question about the inner city.
She was widely defended by Congressional representatives who interpreted Trump's remarks to be racially insensitive.
She is one of only three African Americans to serve on the WHC Association board, in the association’s 100-year history.
