Why he might be annoying:

He began appearing in his parents’ music hall act at age five.
When travelling by train, his parents would hide him in the luggage rack to avoid paying an extra fare.
He was originally chosen to direct ‘Oliver!’ but had to pull out due to a commitment to direct the adaptation of Harold Robbins’ ‘The Adventurers’; his replacement on ‘Oliver,’ Carol Reed, won the Oscar for Best Director, while ‘The Adventurers’ was a critical and box office flop.
With ‘Moonraker,’ he directed the campiest entry in the James Bond film series.

At age seven, he became his family’s main breadwinner as a child actor after his father died of tuberculosis.
He was married to Hilda Tafler for 53 years.
During World War II, he worked on documentaries for the RAF and the US Army Air Forces.
He resisted studio pressure to move the setting of ‘Alfie’ to New York and cast Tony Curtis in the title role. (His choice for the role, Michael Caine, was nominated for an Oscar as Best Actor.)
