The Resume

    (July 25, 1844-June 25, 1916)
Paintings include ‘The Swimming Hole,’ ‘Salutat,’ ‘Max Schmitt in a Single Scull,’ ‘The Surgical Clinic of Professor Gross,’ ‘The Concert Singer,’ ‘The Chess Players’ and ‘Wrestlers’

Why he might be annoying:

He shocked the public by painting nudes.
Although heterosexual, he primarily painted nude men.
He preferred to work in the nude.
He sold very few paintings during his life.
    His middle name was ‘Cowperthwait.’
A critic called him one of art’s ‘almost’s.’

Why he might not be annoying:

He painted male models because most women of that era wouldn’t pose for him. ... and those who would were usually old and fat.
He was forced out of a teaching job for having his female students paint a male nude.
He was one of the first artists to use photography as a tool for painting.
He painted in a realistic style, which was uncommon for the time.
He thought the human body should be celebrated in art, not covered up.
