Sports Executive

The Resume

    (July 22, 1936- )
    Born in Cameron, Texas
President and CEO of McLane Company from (1965-94)
Majority owner of the Houston Astros (1993- )

Why he might be annoying:

He is considered the 'Al Davis' of baseball as a result of his over-involvement with the team's baseball operations.
He refuses to allow his team to enter rebuilding phases, electing to grossly overpay free agents to big contracts.
Despite being the third generation of McLane's to take over the family business, he sold the company to Wal-Mart, in order to concentrate on the Astros full-time.
Under his ownership, he hired and fired at least seven managers.
He threatened the city of Houston with his intent to relocate the Astros if the city didn't build him a new ballpark, which made him sound hypocritical after stating his original intention of not relocating the franchise..
His teams are notorious for being inconsistent and underachieving.

Why he might not be annoying:

He earned an MBA in business administration at Michigan State University.
He and his father, Drayton, Sr., were successful in turing the McLane Company from a family run business to a nationwide operation.
His first move upon taking over the Astros was retiring the team's signature 'rainbow guts' uniform in favor of a modern look.
When his initial uniform change was given a cold reception by fans, he succeeded by changing the team's uniform to a throwback look, in a move that was considered popular by fans.
He was successful in convincing the city of Houston to finance construction for a new ballpark.
When his team faced a public relations nightmare following the collapse of Enron, he wisely renamed the ballpark Astros Field, prior to securing a naming rights deal with Minute Maid.
He watched his team go from the bottom of the standings to a playoff contender, including three consecutive NLCS appearances and a World Series berth in the mid 2000's.
He hired baseball's first African-American general manager, Bob Watson.
He prefers to sit in the stands and watch games with the fans, rather than in private boxes.
