Why they might be annoying:

Will Sergeant stated that the band's name came up after someone suggested other 'stupid' names.
There was a rumor that 'Echo' referred to the drum machine they used at the band's inception when it really didn't.
They have not had as much success in the US as they have had in the UK.
Ian McCulloch was known for his over the top statements. As an example, he once called U2 music for 'bricklayers and plumbers.'
Reverberation, released after Ian McCulloch's departure and the death of drummer Pete de Freitas, was critically panned. This led to the band being dropped by it's record label and a temporary disbanding.

Why they might not be annoying:

In 2002 they received the Inspiration Award from the UK's Q Magazine for their influence on subsequent musicians and fans.
They have had five studio albums that have reached the top ten of the UK album charts.
'Evergreen,' the first album made after the band reformed, was hailed as a return to form.
'The Killing Moon' was used notably in the film 'Donnie Darko.'
Ian McCulloch became friends with Will Sergeant over their love of The Doors. Eventually, the band recorded a cover of 'People Are Strange' for the soundtrack of 'The Lost Boys.'
