    Born in Neuchatel, Switzerland
    Best known for his theories about cognitive development in children
    Divided this development into four stages: sensorimotor (birth-two years), preoperational (two-seven years), concrete operational (seven-eleven years) and formal operational (eleven years and beyond)
    Swiss delegate for UNESCO (1945)
    Founder and director of the International Centre for Genetic Epistemology (1955-1980)

Why he might be annoying:

    He had a lifelong fascination with mollusks.
    He dismissed religion as childish.
    Nonstop studying as a university student damaged his health.
    He married one of his students.
    He claimed children’s sense of morality is more influenced by their peers than their parents.
    He never considered himself a child psychologist despite his groundbreaking studies of child development.

Why he might not be annoying:

    His mother was a rigid Calvinist.
    He published his first scientific paper, about an albino sparrow, at age 10.
    He first realized children reasoned differently than adults after he got a job marking IQ tests.
    He theorized children do not think abstractly until age 11 or 12.
    He influenced the development of child-centered education in the late twentieth century.
    His work also influenced several other fields including primatology, artificial intelligence and evolution.
