U.S. Congressman

The Resume

    (November 30, 1924-January 1, 2005)
    NY Assembly woman (1964-68)
First African American elected to congress (1968)
    Democratic Congresswoman representing Brooklyn (1969-82)
Co-founded NOW (National Organization for Women)
Inducted to Women's Hall of Fame (1993)
Wrote 'Unbossed and Unbought' and 'The Good Fight'
Birth name was Shirley St. Hill

Why she might be annoying:

Her two biggest issues were self interest: Civil Rights and Women's Rights.
As a congresswoman, she hired an all-female staff.
She enjoyed bucking the system, saying: 'My greatest political asset, which professional politicians fear, is my mouth, out of which come all kinds of things one shouldn't always discuss for reasons of political expediency.'
She married Arthur Hardwick just months after divorcing Conrad Chisholm (1977).
She was given many honorary degrees.

Why she might not be annoying:

She was the first African American woman to compete for the Democratic presidential nomination (January 25, 1972).
At the 1972 Democratic National Convention, she received 151 delegate votes.
At three, her parents sent her to Barbados to be raised by her grandmother. She returned to her parents at eleven.
    She graduated Brooklyn College (1946).
She earned her masters from Columbia University.
When a social club at Brooklyn College prohibited blacks from joining, she set up her own club.
Her campaign slogan was 'Fighting Shirley Chisholm--Unbought and Unbossed.'
She was against the Vietnam War.
In a ludicrous move, her first congressional assignment was to the House Agriculture Committee. Representing a purely urban constituency, she lobbied to get her assignment change and it was switched to the Veterans Affairs Committee.
She visited George Wallace in the hospital after he was shot.
